The Cuban crocodiles are among the most intelligent crocodiles/reptiles known to us. Their ability to learn has made them, for a long time, extremely interesting for zoos to have and study. This presence in Zoos and crocodile parks allowed scientists to note one of the most remarkable behaviors in any reptile: Pack-hunting.
At Gatorland, in Florida, USA, the fact that these crocodiles were mostly kept together allowed this observation to be made. But why would a crocodile, that lives on an island and is arguably one of the largest animals on it, need to hunt in a group? Probably because it hasn’t always been the biggest.
125,000 years ago, in Cuba and the rest of the Caribbean, lived a genus of ground sloths that might have constituted prime prey for these mostly-terrestrial crocodiles. The largest of these sloths was the Cuban species, Megalocnus rodens, which reached a weight of nearly 90 kg. Dwarfed by its South American distant relative Megatherium americanum, it still constituted a large grazer of the archipelago.
While today, the Cuban crocodile is limited to eating small mammals and fish, its behavior is still fine-tuned to hunt these dwarf giants.
so is it a thing in (american) english to use “texas” as a word for like, something that’s out of control or chaotic, or as like, “crazy”? like “that party last weekend was totally texas!”
because that is a thing people say in norwegian and i just think it’s important for americans to know that?
this is the best thing I’ve ever heard
i’m sorry wHAT
This is like the time I found out that in Israel “Ma po ze, Chicago?” (What is this, CHICAGO?) is a saying for when people are acting unruly.
in finland if something is far away or in an unknown place we can say that “se on huitsin nevadassa” (it’s in nevada) you can also politely tell that you’d wish someone to fuck off by wishing that they’d go to nevada
It’s good to know that other languages do the “pardon my French” thing.
Well, when we say “Gone South” we mean it’s broken beyond repair, so…
